One of the aspects of my job that I really love is getting to arrange our staff initiatives. While not without its challenges, we do this quite regularly, be it a Wellness event, Mandela Day drive or, like this month, a Women’s Day initiative. I heard about this amazing initiative from a friend of mine and it immediately grabbed my attention because it provides unemployed women from disadvantaged communities the opportunity to train and become nail technicians at Sorbet Salons – my absolute favourite go-to pedi spot. The Amazi Academy recruit these ladies from disadvantaged communities and support, mentor and coach them to becoming professional nail technicians and created this pop-up store concept, Paint it Forward, to enable them to practice their skills and gain experience to prepare them for full-time salon work.
Paint it Forward provided our staff with a 30 minute indulgence in their day where they could get a nail treatment or neck and shoulder massage (which meant the men could join in too) and they had a fabulous candy station where we could indulge our sweet tooth – a major plus! A small treat for us but an invaluable opportunity for the lovely ladies at Amazi to get one step closer to permanent employment.
The ladies were amazing! So warm and friendly – and extremely professional. They made the experience so lovely that I completely forgot I was sitting in our conference room at work. They set up the room so beautifully with gorgeous wooden benches, tables and soft cushions. They had a good range of polishes to choose from – Sorbet, Essie and Morgan Taylor in a number of different colours. Since it was the first warmish day we’ve had in a very long time, I decided to go go for a bright coral colour – Sorbet’s Pink Pepper, which definitely made me feel like there is a bit of Spring in the air! My technician, Ayanda, was such a lovely lady and we chatted away during my 30 minute manicure. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a mani and I enjoyed every minute – and the hand massage was absolute bliss!!! Once my treatment was finished, I could pick the sweeties that I wanted and they were beautifully packed in a pretty paper packet for me to take home.
Our staff members loved today and so many of them came to say how lovely it was – and they cannot wait for us to host the Amazi ladies again. I left work with a very happy heart and beautiful bright nails.
