It’s beginning to look (and taste) a lot like Christmas at The Velvet Cake Co! It’s a feast for the eyes and treat for the taste-buds with their deliciously decadent array of delicacies. Last week, I was invited to their Christmas Press launch and was blown away by the phenomenal display of amazing Christmas delights. While I have tasted their legendary Red Velvet Cake on more than one occasion, I had never actually made it to their Loop street store. Stepping through the glass doors is a bit like walking into Willie Wonkers Chocolate Shop for cake lovers. Light and bright, fresh and welcoming, pastels and pinks and eye popping displays of colourful cake creations.
If you’ve been living up a rock and haven’t heard of The Velvet Cake Co, let me catch you up. Patisserie chef, Jandri van Zyl, opened her first commercial bakery, The Velvet Cake Co in 2012 after her little cake shop, Treat, could no longer keep up with the demand for her phenomenal cake creations. With the promise of innovation and variety, Jandri adds a special something to her creations that keeps you coming back for more. From traditional favourites to trendy masterpieces, every cake that leaves The Velvet Cake Co kitchen has that wow factor that will blow you away. There are now stores in Bellville’s Rosenpark, Tyger Valley, Canal Walk and on Loop Street in Cape Town’s CBD but you can also order online and have your sweet treats delivered straight to your door.
Greeted by crisp glasses of bubbly and glittering gin cocktails, no detail was left untouched. The Christmas cake creations on display were innovative, fun and ridiculously cute – don’t expect your boring fruit cake with marzipan here! Deary and Snowy were my two favourites, both in looks and taste – Deary, a mini chocolate cake filled with pink cream cheese icing, a Lindt ball nose, and bright pink antlers, covered in chocolate icing and vermicelli and Snowy, mini vanilla cake, filled with festive green cream cheese icing, covered in white vermicelli, with a carrot nose and smart top hat. Both cakes have a little “allsorts of fun” pinata filling which adds a lovely touch of Christmas magic.
The Christmas Candyland Rainbow Cake made an eye-popping display of fun with its six layers of rainbow cake, filled with cream cheese icing and coated with a rainbow of buttercream and finished off with an array of candy canes! If you looking for chic and elegant, then the Christmas Chocolate Mint Cake is the one for you – rich layers of indulgent chocolate cake, cream cheese icing, pops of caramel and a hint of mint with a soft, rustic smear of Swiss buttercream to finish it off. But the real show stopper on this cake is the stylish fresh wreath made with seasonal favourites like acorns, holly and dark green foliage that can be repurposed for table decor or to adorn your front door. From mini Red velvet Christmas cakes with toasted meringue to Santa Cake slices and Christmas cupcakes, The Velvet Cake Co has outdone themselves with this years selection of sweetness.
