I’ve always been conscious of the products I use on my skin but since having a baby, I’m a lot more aware of not only the products I use (on him and me) but also the ingredients inside. Sulphites, parabens, petrochemicals, synthetic colourants and fragrances are all big words that get thrown around a lot in the skincare industry and they all sound pretty scary – and with good reason. One of the biggies is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) which also happens to be a big no-no during pregnancy which says a lot about this particular ingredient.
So what exactly is SLS?
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a hugely popular ingredient found in many skincare products and gives products their foaming and cleansing properties. But it is also just happens to be an ingredient found in dishwashing liquids and laundry detergents and a proven skin irritant . Now, I don’t know about you but I definitely don’t love the idea of using an ingredient to clean my skin that also cleans my dishes… But SLS cleans really, really well – and it’s cheap to manufacture – which is why is it so widely used.
But there is something to be said for being too clean. Our skin has a natural barrier which protects it from every-day stressors and using products which contain strong sulphated surfactants (like SLS), strips the skin of it’s natural oils and raises its pH level. Once the skin barrier is broken, the skin can become prone to dryness, itchiness, inflammation, discomfort -which can lead to conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. And as a long-time eczema sufferer, this is not something you want to be dealing with!
SLS is also an environmental pollutant. It is toxic to fish and other aquatic animals and takes a very long time to biodegrade so if you conscious of your carbon footprint, this is one to look out for.
When it comes to organic skincare products, Pure Beginnings is a brand that really stands out for me (you can read my previous reviews here) They believe in keeping your skin as pure as the day you were born by providing high quality, effective, organic skin care products that are not harmful to the environment giving peace of mind right from the beginning. Their products contain no scary sounding nasties and all ingredients are sustainably sourced. When it comes to organic baby skincare, you’ll find everything you from bum cream to wipes, shampoo to toothpaste.
A few our favourites are their Soothing Baby Wash and Shampoo with organic boabab (this one even makes hair washing fun), Berry Toothpaste with xylitol and fluride free (Oliver LOVES the taste of this and after sucking all the toothpaste off his brush, he happily brushes his teeth!), Baby and Kids Sensitive Sun Milk (an absolute essential in our beach bag) and most recently Fun Time Hand Wash with organic rooibos (the busier and more active Oliver gets, the more important hand washing becomes). On our list for winter this year is definitely their Baby and Kids Natural Chest Rub with eucalyptus and lavender – a gentle and effective way to ease congestion and the perfect addition to our winter medicine cupboard.
I absolutely adore their packaging – which is almost all recyclable – but I love their crazy cute child friendly characters even more! Ollie the Owl, Max and Minky, Ruby the Rhino, Ella the Elephant , Toby the Tucan and Cedric the Crocodile all make up a fun and recognizable team for little ones. I love that none of their products carry heavy perfumes or overpowering fragrances but rather the delicious, soft scents of the essential oils used. One of my favourite things is cuddling up in the rocking chair with Oliver in the evenings while he has his bottle and breathing in his delicious, fresh-out-the-bath smell.
